What do you want to learn???

Hey everyone, I apologize for the lack of posts lately.  We have been so preoccupied with taxes and getting everything off our To-Do list before we leave for a week in Vegas for the photography convention WPPI, that I have neglected this poor blog. :(

So my question to you is… What do you want to learn?  Do you want to learn more about the different camera lenses, photographing action (like your kids sports games) or indoor/low light photography.  Or maybe something else?  Please share in the comments below what you would like to learn about and Chris and I continue reading…

Shutter Speed- Be careful of camera shake

Hey everyone!  So have you been setting your cameras to “S” mode (on a Nikon) or “TV” mode (on a Cannon) to play with shutter speed for the exercise I put up earlier this week??  I know I’ve been thinking about shutter speed, and conveying motion using shutter speed this week!  I was on a field trip with Brian on Tuesday, and they were pumping water out of an old fashioned hand pump.  I immediatly thought of the challenge and how I could take one photo with a fast shutter speed to freeze the water drops, and another one continue reading…

Shutter Speed

Hey everyone, now that the weather has cleared up (at least for a few days) let’s learn what shutter speed does, and have some FUN with it! :)

1st- What is Shutter Speed?  Shutter Speed is the length of time your shutter is open, when you take your photos.  This not only determines how much light comes into the camera sensor, but also controls either freezing action, or allowing motion blur.

That whole time your shutter is open, it is recording what it “sees”.

So for action photos (think a soccer game… well because that’s what I photographed!) haha you are going continue reading…

1st Capture Life Workshop Was AWESOME!!

Hey everyone, I apologize for the lack of posts lately.  I was so focused on getting all the details just right for the workshop, I’ve kind of neglected the blog. :(   But I plan to post more now that we had our 1 workshop this last weekend.

First, I’d like to thank all who attended!  What a GREAT group we had on Saturday down at The Urban Hive!!!  You all were so eager to learn and such positive attitudes (even when you got confused) we had a great time watching what we were teaching, “click”.  I know it was a continue reading…

Lesson 6- How light, and where it’s coming from changes a photo

In Lesson 4 we talked about window light, and more specifically, quality of light, and how it’s not just about how MUCH light we have, but the quality of that light that effects a photo. Today we are going to continue on that subject. At the same time I took the photos in lesson 4, I took these of Regan.

I took the both photos in the same location, within seconds of each other.  Both have the blinds slightly closed (to diffuse the light like we talked about in lesson 4).

This 1st photo Regan’s back is facing the light.  continue reading…

Lesson 5- Christmas Tree Photo

Merry Christmas Everyone!!  I had another lesson in mind this week, but with it being Christmas and all I decided to bump that idea and share with you how to get a nice photo in front of the Christmas Tree!

I don’t know about you, but I have a tradition of taking a photo of the kids in front of the tree every year.  I want to be able to capture the twinkle of the lights on the tree, the colors etc.  These photo typically are in a dimly lit room with the glow of the tree.

What have we learned continue reading…

Lesson 4- Window Light

I’m going back to basics ya’ll (and evidently the South as well! ;-) )

pho-tog-ra-phy: noun- The Process or art of producing images of objects on sensitized surfaces by the chemical action of light or of other forms of radiant energy, as x-rays, gamma rays, or cosmic rays

Ok, so digital photography isn’t so much about chemical action of light  yada yada yada… but it IS the reaction of light on our camera sensors.

Now that we have that definition for photography, let’s talk about how without light, there is NO photography. We all know light is important, but do you also continue reading…

Get in close.. with your feet

Hi there everyone!! Today we are going to continue to build upon what we have been talking about all week.  Low aperture (or a wide open aperture) and talk a bit about “zooming with your feet”. Next week we will move onto another focus (no pun intended ;-) ) of our lessons, but for now, let’s focus on aperture for one more day.

I was so excited to get an email from Tiffany earlier in the week sharing one of the photos that she captured after our 1st lesson.  She was so excited about what she had learned from continue reading…
